AI Voice-Over for YouTube Shorts: When It Helps and How to Use It
AI voice-over is text-to-speech narration you add to a video: you type a script, choose a voice, and place the generated audio on your timeline. For YouTube Shorts it works best as a hook line, a quick explainer over B-roll or gameplay, or a recap at the end, not as a replacement for a real person's voice in a clip that's about them.
When AI voice-over helps
Silent or music-only footage: gameplay, screen recordings and B-roll need something to carry the story.
Hooks: a single spoken line in the first second ("This is the worst trade of the season") can stop the scroll on a clip that otherwise starts slow. See hook writing templates.
Context: a one-line setup for a podcast clip that needs it, so the moment makes sense without the episode.
Faceless channels: narration is often the whole format. See how to make faceless podcast clips.
When it hurts
When it replaces a real conversation. Viewers come for the person. A robotic narrator over a great podcast moment makes it feel like a content farm, and platforms are cracking down on low-effort, unoriginal content. See AI content labeling and demonetization risk.
How to add AI voice-over to a Short
1. Write the line you want spoken; keep it short and conversational.
2. Generate it with a text-to-speech voice that matches your channel's tone.
3. Place it on the timeline and duck the original audio under it.
4. Caption the voice-over so muted viewers get it too.
In OptimaClip's Studio editor (Creator plan and up) you type the script, pick from 8 natural voices, and the narration drops onto the timeline. Each voice-over costs 1 credit, up to about a minute of speech.
AI voice-over vs AI dubbing
Voice-over adds new narration. Dubbing re-voices the existing speech in another language to reach new audiences. OptimaClip does both; dubbing is covered in AI dubbing clips into other languages.
Writing a script that sounds natural
Write like you talk. Short sentences, contractions, one idea per line.
Read it aloud before generating. If you stumble, the voice will sound off too.
Spell out numbers and names the way they should be said, such as "twenty twenty-six" instead of "2026" if the voice mispronounces it.
Leave room for the visuals. The voice-over should add information the picture doesn't show.
Mixing voice-over with the original audio
Drop the original audio to around a quarter of its volume under narration, then bring it back up after the line ends. Keep music lower still. If viewers have to strain to hear the voice, they'll swipe.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI voice-over allowed on YouTube Shorts?
Yes, but realistic synthetic content may need to be disclosed, and repetitive, low-effort AI narration can hurt monetization eligibility.
Does AI voice-over hurt reach?
Not by itself. Low-effort videos hurt reach. A good voice-over that adds a hook or context can help retention.
How long should a voice-over be in a Short?
Usually one to three sentences. Longer narration works for explainers but should still be tightly scripted.
