SRT to VTT converter (and VTT to SRT)

Paste or open a subtitle file to convert it between SubRip (.srt) and WebVTT (.vtt). You can also shift every caption earlier or later to fix out-of-sync subtitles, then copy or download the result.

Free · no signup · runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How to convert SRT to VTT

  1. Open your .srt file or paste its contents into the input box.
  2. Leave Convert to on Auto (or choose WebVTT).
  3. If the captions are out of sync, enter a shift in milliseconds (negative to make them appear earlier).
  4. Click Download to save captions.vtt, or Copy to paste it elsewhere.

SRT vs VTT: what's the difference?

Both are plain-text caption formats with cues and start/end timestamps. SRT (SubRip) uses a comma before milliseconds (00:00:01,000) and numbers every cue. WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT header, uses a period (00:00:01.000), and supports extras like styling and cue positioning.

HTML5 video players and many web platforms require WebVTT; editing software and most upload forms accept SRT. Converting between them means rewriting the header and timestamps, which this tool does for you.

Fixing captions that are out of sync

If every caption appears a fixed amount too early or too late (common after trimming the start of a video), enter that offset in the shift box. For example, if you cut 2.5 seconds from the start of the video, shift by -2500.

Getting caption files in the first place

OptimaClip transcribes clips automatically in 21 languages and exports an SRT for every clip, alongside an EDL so you can open the clip in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. Convert that SRT here if your player needs VTT.

FAQ

How do I convert SRT to VTT?

Add a WEBVTT header and change the comma before milliseconds in each timestamp to a period. This converter does it automatically.

Is VTT the same as SRT?

They're very similar plain-text formats. VTT adds a header, uses periods in timestamps and supports styling and positioning.

Does this tool upload my subtitles?

No. Conversion happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
