How many hashtags should you use on short-form video in 2026?
Hashtag strategy has converged across platforms: fewer, more specific tags beat a wall of them. On TikTok and Reels, three to five relevant hashtags is the current sweet spot; on Shorts, one to three, because Shorts leans on the title and spoken content for categorization.
The shift underneath this is that all three platforms now read the actual content — spoken words via transcription, on-screen text, and objects in frame — to categorize a video. Hashtags are a hint, not the primary signal they were a few years ago.
Mix one or two broad tags with two or three narrow ones tied to the specific topic of the clip. A niche tag your exact audience follows is worth more than a generic high-volume one you'll never rank in.
Skip banned, spammy, or irrelevant tags entirely — they can suppress a video rather than help it.
Because the transcript now does categorization work, OptimaClip's accurate auto-captions indirectly help discovery — the clearer the on-screen and spoken text, the better the platform understands what the clip is about.
